Open the Door Without Spiritual Protection—And You Might Not Be the One Who Walks Away

The Spirits Don’t Wait for Permission—Only Protection Holds the Line

In Conjure, protection is not optional. It is absolutely imperative. I read forums and platforms that newbies have. They want to know about the work, how to hex, how to do this and do that. But they don’t ask about protection. How do I get started. Getting into this way of life, this path, is not “Charmed,” nor is it like these moves and shows that put Hoodoo and Magick out like its finite and there are no laws to follow and abide by. I’ve seen too many people and their family get seriously hurt by work. Not just spiritually, but also Physically. Yes, some people are not ethical, but most of us that do live this lifestyle, know what the spirtual realm doesn’t play with people. It’s governed by laws, it’s a dominion that once its given law and a directive, that is what it executes.

Before the first candle is lit, before the first command is spoken, before the first name is called—you MUST guard the gate. Every altar is a dominion in itself. Every ritual is a summoning. And if you step into spiritual work without your perimeters guarded, you don’t just invite spirits in—you invite everything. Our ancestors taught this through whispers, warnings, and hard-earned blood lessons. They knew: the work listens, but so does the enemy. Many of is in cross pollinated Conjure, are opening portals to more than just ancestors.

When you light a candle in conjure, you’re not just igniting wax and wick—you’re tearing open the veil. That flicker isn’t just flame—it’s a signal, a spiritual flare that announces your presence to the seen and unseen. Yes, it’s beautiful. Yes, it’s ancient. But beauty doesn’t make it safe. That flame lowers the veil between realms. It thins the boundary. It invites attention from spirits who recognize fire as a doorway.

What most beginners don’t understand is this: when you strike that match, you are calling to both aid and adversary. You’re making your altar known. Candles in Hoodoo aren’t passive energy conductors. They are portals. And if you don’t have protection in place—if you don’t set the rules, declare your laws, and name who’s allowed in and not—then anything watching, waiting, or wandering might step through. Rootwork respects power. But it devours negligence. So before you light anything, understand this: the flame don’t lie, and it don’t guard itself. This is from years of working conjure and learning the hard lessons,

But if you haven’t named your protection, you won't command—you'll collapse. This post is your warning shot. Because too many new conjure workers are jumping into ritual with open palms and closed eyes. That’s not faith. That’s foolishness. And rootwork don’t forgive fools. It warns, but many are too new to understand the warnings.

If this hits your spirit, keep reading. If it scares you—definitely keep reading. You’re not protected just because you mean well.

I Remember When…

It was her first uncrossing bath.

She lit a white candle, dropped a pinch of hyssop, commanded her directive strong, and stepped into the tub with hope and no covering. No spiritual court called. No blessing. No covering.

That night, her dreams bled black. Voices whispered names she hadn’t told anyone in years. Her animals wouldn’t go near her altar. Shadows lingered at the corner of her eyes.

"Did I do something wrong?" she asked me, shaking.

"No," I said. "You just did something unguarded."

Because energy follows command. And if you cleanse without sealing, you leave yourself raw—open to anything with malicious intent. The spirits see that as weakness. And where you meant to wash away residue, something else found a home.

I walked her through a full reversal. But it cost her. More than herbs. More than time. She lost weeks of peace, and her confidence cracked. She never forgot again.

That’s why I teach protection first. Not because it sounds good. But because I know what happens when you skip it. Been there. Done that. Got the t-shirt.

Command Before You Cleanse: Why Intent Alone Won’t Keep You Safe in Conjure

I’ve heard it too many times to count. “Just trust your intent,” they say. “The spirits know your heart.” Yeah—they do. And the spirits that don’t walk with you? They count on that. They count on you walking blind. What they don’t tell you is this: spirits don’t care about your ignorance. In Conjure, intention without command is an open door with no guard on post.

Rootwork is not unintentional. It’s not playful. It’s contractual. When you open a door in ritual, you owe an answer to whatever steps through. And without protection in place, you are the smallest force in the room. That elephant in the corner? It’s not a metaphor—it’s waiting. And it’s watching. It’s there. I get inboxed a lot on how to cleanse a house or space. And I go and do these spiritual evictions as well.

Protection is not just lighting white or black candles and mumbling a prayer. Protection is strategy. It is command. It is law. It means speaking Psalm 91 before you close your eyes at night. It means naming your guardians aloud. It means summoning your protective court and setting the law before any working begins. It means stating clearly and without hesitation who is forbidden from hearing, seeing, witnessing, or interfering with your work, your body, or your altar space. You must bar access to all watchers, all whisperers, all forces sent to monitor or undo you. So that tells me, many are not divining anything before, during, and after they do a working. That will be a another post.

Every working you perform—whether a bath, a jar, or a candle—is a flare in the spirit realm. It announces movement. And if your defenses are not in place, something will always answer. Sometimes it’s a curious or malicious force. Sometimes it’s something you didn’t send for. Sometimes it’s another practitioner’s mess, sent to hover or strike.

From Seeker to Sovereign: What Real Protection Unlocks in Rootwork

After implementing these protective steps, clients consistently report experiencing clearer readings, with fewer spiritual blockages or distortions clouding the message. Many describe a noticeable reduction in spiritual disturbances around their home and altar space. Dream clarity improves—what was once jumbled or chaotic becomes vivid and guided. That heavy, drained feeling after ritual work? It disappears. They feel energized, not emptied.

One client said, “It felt like something left me—but nothing came back in.” That is the shift we aim for.

Protection isn’t just about keeping harm out. It’s about standing in your spiritual authority. It transforms you from a seeker into a sovereign. Because in Conjure, power doesn’t bow to hope. Power respects power. And when you declare your protection, you declare your dominion.
