Rootwork for New Seekers: A Comprehensive Site for Hoodoo Practices and Spiritual Law
New to rootwork? This guide walks you through real Hoodoo basics: from setting your altar to speaking with power.
ROOTWORK FOR BEGINNERS: START WHERE THE POWER LIVES
I’ve been walking this path for nearly 30 years. Not reading about it. Not trying it on like a costume. Living it. I was blessed to have a teacher, an Elder, Nailah Oseye, so you will hear me talk about her a lot. Not only because she has taught and continues to guide me, but she is also blood of my blood.
Rootwork isn’t something I picked up off the internet. It’s in my hands. My breath. My bones. I was raised by people who believed in spiritual law long before it was profitable to say so. This is how I walk, live, command, and protect what’s mine.
So if you're here because you feel something calling?
Good. Now listen with your whole chest, because what I'm about to say might shift how you look at conjure forever.
Rootwork is not spellwork.
It's not “manifestation.”
It damn sure isn’t candle magic by mood board.
Rootwork is LAW.
It’s ancestor-born, blood-fed, spirit-backed work that was never meant to be pretty. It’s protection that comes with pressure. It’s spiritual warfare and ancestral authority. You don’t do this work because it looks good on your altar. You do it because your life depends on knowing who the hell you are in the face of spiritual chaos.
Let’s break it down—no bullshit, no cute words. Just the truth, straight from a worker trained by a worker for decades.
1. Start With WHO You’re Working With
Every ancestor isn’t welcome just because they dead.
I said what I said. Some of your ancestors betrayed blood, abandoned children, harmed women, entrapped men, and served the same forces that enslaved us. You don’t owe them your altar. You don’t owe them your offerings. You owe discernment.
Start with your known people. The ones who protected, fed, taught, loved. Vet every spirit. Burn a white candle. Speak aloud:
“If you walk in my blood and stand in truth, come forward. If not, turn away now.”
Listen. Feel the air. Watch how your body responds. Rootwork is a dialogue, not a monologue.
2. Rootwork Is Built on Law, Not Luck
You don’t “try” a root. You command with it. Every herb, every oil, every flame moves in alignment with spiritual law. This isn’t witchcraft. It’s enforcement. When you use High John, calamus, or cinnamon, you’re not just working with a plant—you’re activating ancestral and spiritual authority.
If you isn’t ready to walk in authority, you isn’t ready to do real work.
3. Candles Isn’t Cute. They’re Contracts.
If you’re lighting a candle without knowing what it’s supposed to do, stop.
Colors matter. Waxes matter. Dressing oil matters. And above all else—intent matters.
White resets the room and clarifies the law
Black severs ties and calls judgment
Red enforces power and draws fast results
Yellow rules the mind and clears confusion
Don’t light a candle unless you’re ready to carry what it calls.
4. Cleanse First. Always.
Would you serve food on a dirty plate?
No?
Then don’t call spirits into a filthy room. Before any working, cleanse your space and self. That means smoke, water, camphor, hyssop—whatever your lineage taught. If you don’t know yet, start with a Florida Water wash and speak:
“By this wash, I clear all confusion, residue, and blockage. This is sacred ground now.”
Power flows through order. And cleansing is the first act of divine order.
5. The Psalms Are More Than Prayer. They’re Codes. And they are optional but they carry weight.
People love to reduce the Bible to a tool of oppression. I get it. Colonizers used it to control us—but they didn’t write it. And they sure as hell didn’t decode it. I use it as declarations of power. Now don’t get it twisted, I don’t use it every single time. But I use it when I am doing heavy rootwork.
The Psalms are spiritual artillery.
Psalm 23 ensures provision and shepherding through fear
Psalm 91 calls down divine protection and angelic shields
Psalm 109 executes spiritual judgment
Psalm 75 delivers verdicts and removes false authority
These aren’t gentle poems like they want you to believe. They’re legal decrees. When spoken in rootwork, they activate the spirit realm and lock the work in place. Don’t whisper them. Command them.
6. You Are the Altar Before You Build One
Don’t get caught up in aesthetics.
Your body is the first altar.
Your skin is a witness.
Your blood is the contract.
Before you start building elaborate spaces, make sure you are aligned. Speak with intention. Bathe with meaning. Move through your home like you command it. Because you do.
BEGINNER ASSIGNMENT: Claim Your Ground
Tonight, light one white candle. No oils, no dressing. Just flame.
Say aloud:
“I open this space in my name, by my authority, and through the blood that built me. I call only what protects, uplifts, and walks in light. This is sacred ground now. Let no confusion, no lie, no enemy enter.”
Then sit.
Still. Silent.
See what comes. Write it down. Dream on it. The work begins the moment you declare the space.
Final words:
You don’t need a thousand herbs to start. You need clarity. You need law. You need courage to walk the road your people paved with grit, grief, and knowledge that you are the architect and have to power to change your life.
This is Rootwork.
Not curated. Not colonized.
But claimed.
