How Protection Covers, Lockouts, and Reverses Malicious Intent From Your Enemy's
They call it shielding, warding, and blocking. We call it covering, locking, and reversing. Let's unpack how some rootworkers really protect what’s theirs—spirit-first.
***READER QUESTION***
Do rootworkers use shielding, warding, and blocking like in modern spiritual systems?
Bubbles Ain’t Shit When Spirits Are Given Your Name
Yes—but we do in a conjure way. In Hoodoo, we shield, ward, and block—but we don’t call it that. We call it setting a guard, covering yourself, or locking your gates. It’s gritty, commanding, and passed down through oral tradition. I’ve taught this to my grown children and to the ones I spiritually raise. We don’t shield with white light—we cover with final decrees, guard with appointed watchers and guardians, and lock with spoken command. Our people didn’t survive on imagination, they weren’t allowed to have one; they survived on red brick dust at the door, railroad spikes in the earth, and Psalms written above doors and windows. The divine hedge we build is made from oil, prayer, and fire—not empty vibes. You don’t imagine safety in Hoodoo—you enforce it.
Enslaved Africans in the American South were not permitted the luxury of fantasy or passive spirituality. Imagination was a threat, and time to dream was often stripped away by forced labor and violence. Their survival was rooted in action, not wishful thinking—ritual, prayer, cunning, and practical magick grounded in necessity. Hoodoo developed as a functional survival system, not a spiritual escape.
Modern spiritual circles talk about “bubbles” and “auras.” That ain’t old school conjure. But then again, a lot of these new age philosophies are being blended with the old ways. Nothing in the spirit realm gives a damn about your bubble. Protection in Hoodoo is tactical. It’s ancestral warfare. Your altar isn’t complete if it don’t know how to guard your body, your home, your money, and your bloodline. Your candle isn’t just for raising vibes—it’s a spiritual sentry standing watch while you sleep. You don’t burn a flame to “feel good” all the time. While your feeling good and one with the trees and in your happy place. Someone could be in the background about to spirit the breaks off your ass with not feel so good roots and malicious spirits. Yes, they will call some evil ass spirits to do some shit to you, you can’t put a white light around to get it off.
You lit a flame to watch your back. Run interference and defense, to fuck up anyone that comes nigh. And to be honest, you come for mine, I am reducing that ass down to nothing and then some. Every element of protection in conjure is alive—your oils are charged, your dirts are commanded, your prayers are backed by covenant. There’s no room for hoping something stays out. There’s only law. Rootworkers don’t “light and pray.” We light and judge. We seal and block.
And let’s be real—out in these magickal streets, somebody always got beef. Sometimes it’s a spirit. Sometimes it’s a bitter ex. And sometimes? It’s another rootworker. So I don’t just teach folks how to protect themselves—I show them how to stand like their ancestors did. I teach how to set a guard with Psalm 91 or major decrees, how to ward your doors with brick dust and their properties with railroad spikes, and how to block by binding evil at the gate before it ever makes it to your altar. Conjure ain’t passive, I know I keep saying that, but it isn’t and it won’t be the last time I do. We don’t let attacks reach us. We command them to fall at our feet. That’s the difference. Shielding, warding, blocking? We just call that doing what’s necessary to keep our name out people mouths, our house quiet, and our spirit untouched.

Story Time
I have friend—let’s call her Shelby. Always exhausted. Drained. Said she couldn’t keep peace in her home no matter how many white or black candles she burned.
She’d been taught the new age way: “Visualize light,” “Set an intention,” “Imagine a shield.” And frankly, a lot of people can’t visualize, then they say if you can’t then speak. Why not just speak in the first place.
But she was living with a man who had generational rage—and spirits were riding that rage. Her "shield" was getting trampled.
I told her, “Girl, you are not covered. You just hoping the mess don’t touch you.”
We started small. She anointed her body every morning with Psalm oil I made for her and whispered Psalm 91 while brushing her teeth. It can be done. That was her first covering herself.
Next, we red-brick dusted her front door and nailed railroad spikes into the four corners of her yard. That was her what they say ward. Setting a guard at thresholds. I taught her to light a black candle with reversal oil for 9 days, then every Tuesday at 9PM—and speak Psalm 35 like a judge handing down a sentence. And when I say handing it down like a sentence, he was guilty as charged and from now on these it what’s going to happen. That what they call a block, pretty much hot-footing back a source.
Two weeks in, her house felt different. Calmer. Quieter. He wasn’t slamming things anymore. She wasn’t hiding in the bathroom with headaches, calling me when this dude was trippin’. The rootwork worked. Because we didn’t just visualize—we enforced.
Weak Protection Isn’t Just Dangerous—It’s a Bloodline Risk
So let’s revisit this, they say shielding is white light, warding is energy fences, and blocking is just “not thinking about it,” but that’s not protection, that’s procrastination with glitter. Especially when there are very skilled rootworkers that will dismantle weak protections, and then what? They just popped your bubble and now their enforcers are running ransack all you’re your life. In conjure, I don’t wait for attacks and hope I’m covered, I build a damn fortress with tools that hold charge, not air. I cover myself in altar-charged oil, I ward with red brick, iron spikes, and commands that see spirit before it knocks, and I block by binding what’s thrown and sending it back marked. That flip-pa-ratchi. Protection in Hoodoo is not passive—you will get yours and your family’s ass handed to you being that way. These days, enemies don’t just target you, they go after everyone you love and care about, family and friends, and generations. And if I’m not setting my sentinels, laying my lines, and cutting the leak at the source, I’m leaving the door wide open for whatever wants in.
Your Life Don’t Get Quiet Because You Hope—It Gets Quiet Because You’ve Done The Work To Cover it.
The truth is simple: when you stop treating protection like a vibe and start treating it like a spiritual command, everything shifts. Your house calms—not from luck, but from law. Your spirit gets stronger, not just lighter. Your enemies don’t just disappear—they stumble at the gate. Your life don’t get quiet because the storm stopped—it gets quiet because it couldn’t reach you. That’s the power of real Hoodoo protection: you become the one who’s covered, guarded, and sealed in divine law. And ain’t a damn thing soft about that.
